Now, more than ever they are focusing their attention locally to help nurture the roots of our community. Let’s show our appreciation for their community support during National Pharmacy Appreciation Month!

In nature, it is a tree’s roots that are the foundation for providing the nutrients and minerals it needs to survive. The roots of one tree then subsequently provide support to the surrounding soil. One root system can have far-reaching impacts on the health of the forest, however with more roots from a variety of plants the forest flourishes and creates a beautiful diverse ecosystem.

Two Pharmacy wants to help support more roots and grow a stronger more diverse community. We know we are stronger together. Through their Community Roots program, they commit to donating 1% of sales through the till each month to a local organization or fundraiser.

Past contributions – December: Cochrane Activettes received over $4500; January: Big Hill Lodge received over $4200; February we are supporting Bethany Care Centre.

'Open That Bottle Night’ is an annual occasion that aims to motivate people to reconnect with each other over a bottle, and create good memories with friends and family.

February 10th - National Umbrella Day

Do you know that there are free umbrellas in Cochrane’s Historic Downtown (HDC) to use for rain or shine? It is part of the HDC “We’ve Got you Covered” Program. Throughout HDC, merchants have beautiful umbrellas that you can pick up and drop off at various locations! Not only are they windproof and provide protection, but they are also fun to take photos with friends, landmarks and public art!

They may not be outside at this time of the year, but you can certainly ask any of the HDC businesses if you would like to take one for a stroll. Hands up if you love a good bag of pork rinds 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️

Pork Rind Appreciation Day started in 2011 when Rudolph Foods (the largest manufacturer of Pork Rinds) declared the day a National Day. It is celebrated on Super Bowl Sunday.

According to” Always the Holiday“, here are some fun facts about pork rinds:
- Nutritionally, pork rinds contain 9 grams of fat, 17 grams of protein and contain no carbohydrates.
- In Brazil, pork rinds are called torresmo.
- Thailand’s version of pork rinds are called khaep mu.
- The Mexican variety of pork rinds are known as chicharrons.
- Westminster, Ohio, with a population 300, is known as the ”Pork Rind Capital of the World.”

Feed The Birds Day was created by Bob Matthews of Rochester, NY in 2016. It is a day that is vitally needed, and could save the lives of many backyard songbirds.

Get outside and play! ❄️

Just 15 minutes West of Cochrane on Hwy 1A, get up close and personal with the Wolfdog Packs at @yamnuskawdsanct. Open to the public Thur - Mon, there are a number of different tours you can to view and interact with these beautiful animals.

Don't forget - You are visiting a sanctuary and not a zoo. Wolfdogs, especially the new arrivals, are much more sensitive than regular dogs and can be quite shy or skittish around humans. Please take a look at the Covid protocols and general rules that all visitors must follow, from no children under six, no dogs (for obvious reasons) to what to wear on a wintery visit to make the most of your tour.

Here’s the beautiful thing about snowshoeing: you don’t need to be a finely tuned and trained athlete to do it. You need legs. You need some time. You need some snowshoes. And you need some snow.

Not surprisingly, given Cochrane’s many green spaces, extensive trail network, and the surrounding mountain parks, there is no shortage of places to go for an enjoyable pounce through the powder.

Hot tip! The @c@cochrane_public_library offers free snowshoe rentals (all you need is a library card) for everyone. Although they have numerous pairs, the free rental service is very popular. So go early to make sure you get your pair! (Regular winter boots work well for snowshoeing.)
