Adventure lies in wait all around Cochrane. And let’s face it, we’re all ready to venture (safely) outdoors while the gorgeous summer weather continues.
Here are some of our favourite things to do and places to go. Not all are open this season, for obvious reasons but ALL are worth the wait.
Howling at the Moon
The Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary is open! Come visit the members of the Engadine Pack – meet Quinn, the most dominant female and her brothers, Grizz – known as the gentle giant – and Aspen, who is the shy and timid one.
There are a variety of tours to choose from (just no indoor tours until next year). The purpose of the tours is to educate visitors about these fabulous animals – part wolf, part dog, as the name suggests – and to raise awareness about wolf conservation. All proceeds from the tours directly fund the sanctuary and its continued rescue efforts. Please visit the website to learn what you need to know before your visit.
There once was a home…
…where the buffalo roamed hundreds and hundreds of years ago across the lands that became known as Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park. Just east of Cochrane, it’s a great place for cycling, hiking or just drinking in the view. Learn about its fascinating history at the Visitors Centre. A town, long since gone to dust (along with the brickyard), had aspirations of being bigger and better than Cochrane. No chance there! But the sweeping vistas of the western foothills and distant mountains will take your breath away (if the bike paths haven’t already). You’ll likely see an artist or two trying to capture the landscape and endless prairie sky. Visit the Alberta Parks website to learn more about their COVID-19 response.
Gypsy’s Caravan Adventure Hostel – worth the wait
Due to the current situation, Gypsy’s Caravan is closed and will re-open next summer. Adventures designed especially for small groups of friends, families and newcomers to the great outdoors are certainly worth waiting for. In the meantime, visit their website where you can purchase gift cards that don’t expire, chalk bags and toques so you’ll be ready to book your adventure next year.
Test your Skills with Adventure Quest
Although Hunter Valley Adventures is not able to offer their usual trips in 2020 that include Whitewater rafting, canoeing, fishing, or horseback riding, you can book your off the grid adventure for 2021! This year, they launched “Adventure Quest”, an experience that provides an opportunity to come together in the natural environment. The Quest – to complete a series of challenges working on communication and team building, and most importantly, building positive memories together. Follow a story that leads you on your adventure, challenging your outdoor education, team building, and survival skills. There are two options – one suitable for families with children up to 12 and a second story for youth or adult groups.
