Prairie Girls Vintage Market
For years and with no success, I have shopped for a sitting bench that is unique, hand-made, functional, and rustic. I had no expectations whatsoever when I walked into the Prairie Girls Vintage Market, but surprisingly the perfect bench presented itself to me within just 20 minutes of my arrival. I had not planned on shopping at all, but my curiosity led me from one stall to another. The market was truly a one-stop shop for anything vintage.
Located at the Cochrane Agricultural Society Barn, the Prairie Girls Vintage Market featured talented vendors that were handpicked by event organizers, Tanya and Leah. Four years ago, the two sisters launched the market with the intention of sharing their love for “old junk” with the community. The market has since become a popular annual event, and this year alone it attracted approximately 3000 patrons!
One Stop Shop for Anything Vintage
The market is also a great reunion for returning vendors like Deborah Wilkinson who is grateful to reconnect with fellow vendors from previous years. Wilkinson began her interior design career as a hobby, turning nonfunctional items into practical and beautiful home solutions. She eventually brought her talents to serve the public and now runs her company Touch of Elegance Interiors. Looking around Deborah’s stall, there were countless creative ideas designed for everyday needs. A patron offered money for an Ikea-turned-floral-design-bookshelf that Wilkinson had created for her own use; the shelf was not even for sale!
Shopping Event giving back to Charity
Not only was the Prairie Girls Vintage Market a great shopping event, it also supported local charities such as the Big Hill Haven which is an emergency shelter for women. The charity was on location and volunteers collected small donations by helping customers transport large items.
With so many good things happening, it is no wonder this market has become so popular. I don’t consider myself a vintage type, yet I found my long sought-after treasure within minutes. If you are planning on visiting Cochrane, plan your trip around this amazing market. Even if you don’t buy anything, the event is an extraordinary “eye-candy” experience. And you never know, the prairie girls might have just the perfect thing for you or a loved one.
